Abstract

HEMATOLOGICAL, URINARY AND BIOCHEMICAL REFERENCE PARAMETERS IN THE RAT AND THE MOUSE

When experimental models are performed, reliable references are needed in terms of hematological and biochemical values before defining secondary alterations to the experiment. This data can be obtained with control groups in each study, which is usually the most suitable, although another excellent source are the historical results of diverse groups of control animals [1].

Thus, information of normal values in standard conditions in terms of many aspects (storage, nutrition, hours of light per day, age of the animals...). The availability of good control reference values is essential for a correct evaluation of the secondary pathological alterations in different experimental models. That is why hematological, urinary and biochemical reference values in the rat and mouse are included in Tables 1 to 15 .

With respect to the coefficient variation and correlation between the rat and human parameters, there are values with small variation coefficients, both in the rat and in man, for example: serum proteins, glucose, cholesterol, urea, sodium, potassium, chlorine, calcium and inorganic phosphorus [2]. There are parameters with big variation coefficients in both species, the rat and man, but with a good correlation between them: triglycerides, Aspartate-aminotransferase (AST), Alanin-aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase [2]. And, lastly, there are parameters with greater variations in the rat than in the human being, for example: albumin, albumin/globulin index, bilirubin and creatinine [2]....
